In order to be a sponsor for Confirmation, one must be a confirmed, Catholic Christian who is at least 16 years of age and who faithfully practices and believes in the Catholic faith as a participating member of a parish community. While you are not expected to already be a saint, you cannot be living your life in a way that directly contravenes Church teaching. So for example, you are expected to attend Mass every weekend, and if you are married, you must be married in the Catholic Church. You should pray for your candidate daily, both before their Confirmation and after, and you should live your life in such a way that sets a good example for your candidate on how to follow Christ. The role of being a Catholic sponsor is a very serious one, and it must be taken seriously.
